Minjee Lee Shares With Brother Min Woo A Golfing Historical First

What is the odds of a brother winning one week in professional golf and a week later his sister also is triumphant?

That’s what happened with Australian-born brother and sister Min Woo Lee and Mingjee Lee.

Just seven days after 25-year-old baby brother Min Woo captured the Macau Open, and his first win on the Asian Tour, and big sister Mingjee won the LPGA’s BMW Ladies Championshipo in South Korea.

It’s believed such a scenario has never happened before in men’s and women’s professional golf.

Mingjee, 27, defeated American Alison Lee with a birdie at the first extra hole after both players ended regulation play locked at 16-under.

“These last few holes, I was quite excited to play, and you know, we always want to be putting ourselves in that position, in the contending position, week-in, week-out and I was lucky enough to do it this week,” said Minjee. “It’s just really fun to play in those type of conditions and those situations.”

The win is Minjee 10th LPGA title and second win in her last three starts after claiming the Kroger Queen City Championship in Cincinnati some five weeks ago.

Of special note, Sunday’s win makes Mingee the third player from Australia to reach double digits in Tour victories, joining Jan Stephenson (16) and Karrie Webb (41).

West Australian born Minjee has now captured 10 LPGA titles since a breakthrough triumph in 2015.    While two of those 10 wins were majors.

Of note in defeating Alison Lee is that she had defeated Lee 11-years ago in capturing the US Junior Championship.

Defending champion Lydia Ko, a South Korea-born New Zealander, shot 69 to finish 14-under 274 and was two strokes behind in third place.
