Tiger Woods’ name will forever be associated with the Old Course at the Home of Golf, especially after capturing back-to-back St. Andrews-hosted Open Championships in 2000 and 2005.
However, not all seems to be happy in the Auld Grey Toon with news breaking earlier this week that Woods will team with good friend Justin Timberlake to open the second of their T-Squared upmarket sports bar and grill within the near 100-year-old New Picture House cinema located on North Street in St. Andrews.
Fife Council is yet to give pemission to the project but news of redeveloping the cinema and turning into into a glitz sports bar has been met with some stuffy Scottish nose negativity.
The first T-Squared up-market bar and bistro, featuring many TV screens, bar, games area and plenty of Woods and Timberlake memorabilia was met with great reviews when it opened last month in the heart of Manhatton in New York however North Street in St. Andrews is not the heart of the Big Apple.
“This town has been very good to Tiger Woods, and this is not the way to repay residents. St Andrews is unique, and that building is iconic. An American bar is completely out of keeping. It will be full of American golfers with nothing left in the town for children at all.”
Clearly, Councillor Dobson has not visited the typical US of A looking insides of Hams Hame just over the road from the 18th green on the Old Course nor has his stood on the ‘full of children’ queues waiting for an ice cream at Jannettas Gelateria on South Street.

Disagreeing with Dobson is fellow St. Andrews councillor Callum MacLeod, who says the town of St. Andrews must continue to evolve.
“There has been a lot of strong reaction against this idea. But it’s the old story – if you don’t use it, you lose it. I’ve been to the cinema recently, and there was hardly anyone there. If it was a flourishing cinema, as it used to be, then it wouldn’t be under threat.
“St Andrews is a tourist destination, and the culture has changed. Things evolve, and St Andrews must evolve with it.”
The cinema’s MD, David Morris, and as reported in GolfByTourMiss original story on this matter, said the cincema is endorsing the plans, claiming they secure the long-term future of the venue.
Here’s raising a glass to TW and JT.
