MacIntyre Secures Maiden European Ryder Cup Selection

Crack open the champers!

With Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre securing a maiden European Ryder Cup cap.

The proud Oban lefty becomes the 23rd Scot to represent Scotland in a Ryder Cup since Stirling’s Stewart Burns in 1929 and with MacIntyre the first Scot in nine years to pull on the European team colours.

MacIntyre was on route to Geneva Airport and return flight home when confirmation of his automatic selection in Luke Donald’s European side was confirmed and this after Poland’s Adrian Meronk ended outside the top-10 at the close of his Omega European Masters round.

The reigning Australian Open champ needed to finish second or better on the Crans-sur-Sierre course and MacIntyre in the mid-50s to have any hope of denying MacIntyre.

No doubt, Meronk has done enough to earn a wildcard pick when Donald names his full side at 2pm (UK time) tomorrow – Monday September 4th.

It’s an undertstatement to say it’s been a stressful few weeks for MacIntyre who virtually had a target on his back with as many as six players looking to ‘steal’ MacIntyre’s third place standing on the Europe points standing.

There was also the added pressure on MacIntyre’s shoulders in being grouped last week alongside European Team captain Luke Donald for the opening two days of the Czech Masters while Omega European Masters organisers used the first two rounds in Switzerland to group MacIntyre alongside Meronk and Yannick Paul.

The German-born Paul was MacIntyre’s nearest Ryder Cup rival and the No. 4 ranked played on the Rome standings signalled his intentions right from the outset with a sizzling 64 before fading.

“I’m so excited to be part of this year’s European Ryder Cup team, and I am really looking forward to Rome, ” said MacIntyre.

“It has been a tough qualifying campaign, but I am pleased with the way I have dealt with the challene and to have earned one of the six automatic places.

“I’ve worked hard to play in the Ryder Cup, but it’s now important that go on and win it”.
