Scotland’s top-ranked Robert MacIntyre was returning to his rented apartment and back to bed following a 4.45am wake-up call and then walking off his final green some nine hours later with a disappointing three-over par 75 on the opening day of the PGA Championship.
The effort, and in only MacIntyre’s second PGA Championship, saw him finish in a then clubhouse share of 68th place
MacIntyre was one-under after brilliant holing 18-foot birdie at the 13th , and the fourth hole of his round, but never recovered in dropping three shots over the 17th and 18th holes.
He bogeyed the tough par-3 17th but then then had to take a penalty drop down the left side of the 18th, and in finding the green in four MacIntyre two-putted for a double-bogey ‘6’.
MacIntyre then completed his inward half with a bogey at the third to drop to four-over ahead of a landing this second shot to just eight inches for a tap-in birdie on the seventh.
He closed out with two pars and in a round that included the impressive statistic of hitting 12 of 14 fairways but with shortest club in his bag adding to MacIntyre’s hurt in registering 32 putts.
He said: “I’m disappointed with the score as I felt like I played as really good as I could but I just didn’t hole that many putts.
“You get days like that but then I take a lot of confidence from that round, as I only missed two fairways which is not too bad.
“The golf course was probably top-two in terms of the hardest I’ve played as there’s definitely no let-up but in saying that, and with the wind now getting stronger, I’m going back to bed.
