Austrian Wiesberger Continues To Stand Tall In Denmark

Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger continues to lead the way into the final round and the defence of his Made In HimmerLand title in Denmark.

Wiesberger, 35, was among five leading post day one before moving two clear of his rivals on day two and now is one in front following a third round 68 to move to 14-under par.

He managed six birdies and half as many bogeys and if there was a standout birdie, it his third shot from the back at the 12th and with Wiseberger’s second shot flying the green and ending-up in deep rough.

“I feel good”,  said Wiesberger.

“It wasn’t as easy today scoring wise, obviously conditions were a lot easier but I had to scramble a little bit. Got a couple of good breaks, gutsy up-and-downs as well, you know I am not happy about the last hole obviously, but I’m still in a good position for tomorrow and I know exactly what it is going to feel like on that tee going in with a one-shot lead, so that is going to be nice.

“Just down 12 I got a massive break, it was at least a two-shot swing really, actually hit a good shot up there, just flew forever and didn’t come down and ran over the green, so I would say it was probably one in ten thousand to get up and down and one in a million to hole it, so you take those.

“Sometimes it needs to happen to stay up there with the leaderboard, so I will take the bonuses and glad about that. Putted decent and the shorter holes I took advantage of on 14 and 17, but a lot of shots still left out there”.

Sweden’s Alexander Bjork, who aced the par-3 17th on Friday, birdied the same hole in a round 65 to be one back on 13-under par.

England’s Laurie Canter shot a 64 to be two adrift on 11-under par and with six at 10-under par including 48-year-old Richard Bland (68), who will lock-up a US Open tee-time next fortnight should the recent British Masters champ finish top-10.

Wiesberger captured the then named 2019 Made in Denmark and the first of three victories that year including the Scottish and Italian Open titles but with the 2020 Made in Denmark cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now the affable Austria is just one round away from a second Danish victory delight.
