Palm Beach Gardens, FL ….
Tommy Fleetwood insists he was not about to ‘sit and sulk’ over his disappointment in letting slip victory at the Honda Classic.
Fleetwood had led by a shot heading to the final round and incresed his lead to three with back-to-back birdies at his opening two holes but the Englishman found himself four adift of South Korean Sungjae Im with four holes to play.
The Englishman reduced that to just one when he brilliantly birdied the par-3 17th but only for Fleetwood to send his second shot into the water down the right side of the final hole in taking a bogey ‘6’ to eventually post last day 71 and settle for third at four-under par.
“I’m disappointed now. Sungjae — somebody shot a better score than me,” said Fleetwood.
“I tried my hardest, got close, getting closer, getting better, and — yeah, it’s disappointing and I’ll be thinking about it.
“Little things will come into your mind like what if or what if that, but it is what it is. We’ve got amazing events
coming up, and my game is in good shape where I actually feel like I can hit it better, as well. I don’t feel like this week I’ve been absolutely — I’ve played some absolutely fantastic golf, but I still feel like my game could have felt better at times, and I think that’s something to look at and go away and work on.“I feel like I can get sharper and keep playing better. It’s not to say I will, but I’m going to try.”
Fleetwood is not contesting this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational and instead with return home to his young family before returning to the States for the Players Championship.
“I’ll absolutely look forward to seeing my family and I’ll keep working,” he said.
“And that’s the thing, with the way golf is now, just because I’ve made bogey on the last here, you don’t have time to go away and sit and sulk about it.
“The Players is coming up next week, they want to win that tournament and if you’re playing well, make the most of it and hopefully I can do that next week.”
Fleetwood headed into this week’s Honda Classic the highest world-ranked Englishman at No. 12 and his third place finish will see him jump three spots to the new No. 10.
In the process he will bump Tiger Woods out of No. 10 and with Woods outside of the top-10 since going from No. 12 to the World No. 6 last April in winning the Masters.
