Palm Beach Gardens, FL ….
Charl Schwartzel brilliantly capped his second round at the Honda Classic in holing a 206-yard second shot for eagle at the par-4 16th at PGA National.
Schwartzel had minutes earlier dropped back-to-back shots at 14 and 15 when he came to the 426-yard par-4 16th and the second hole of the famed ‘Bear Trap’.
Then to the absolute delight of spectators, the 2011 Masters champion’s second shot hit the green and then disappeared into the bottom of the cup for a ‘2’ to lift the South African back to one-under par while a birdie at 18 handed the 35-year a round of 69 to end the day sharing ninth place at two-under par.
“You know, I holed a shot like that on 16 at the Bears Club a few weeks ago and when I had 224-yards and using a 4-iron whereas today’s shot was a 5-iron,” he said.

“There wasn’t too many who saw the Bears Club shot but there was certainly plenty all around 16 today and they gave me a great reception and that’s why you saw me bowing to the crowd as they clearly loved the shot.
“It was good also to birdie the last and get back to under par for the round. The thing is that no-one is running away with the event and my caddy and I were saying that this Honda Classic, and probably one or two other events, that when you make the cut on the number who can still quite easily come through the field over the weekend and win.
“Five-under is currently leading and three-over is the cut, so that is 70-odd players spread out over just eight shots.
“Though the course is playing hard and it’s only getting harder,”
Schwartzel came into the Honda Classic and in just his third PGA Tour event of the year having finished T5th earlier this month at the AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
“My putting has been great and even before my injury while the ball I am using is great, and the good thing is I am fit and healthy.”
And do you have one-eye already on returning to Augusta?
“I have been thinking about Augusta as I have been thinking of not using a thicker grip putter, and it’s not that I don’t dislike my current putter and it’s just that I don’t think a thick-grip putter works as good at Augusta,” he said.
