Paul Lawrie was surprised with a Champions Tour ‘Welcome’ cake on his first tee and responded by kick-starting his debut in the over-50s brigade with a 15-foot birdie putt at the Insperity Invitational in Houston, Texas.
The former Open Champion had played three shots at the par-5 13th or the fourth of his round when the siren sounded to halt play.

Lawrie was among 60 players to have managed to get onto the Woodlands course and with some 18 others not managing to tee-off.
The early starters had managed to play eight holes and with the round to resume early on Saturday morning (local time).
We’re not sure what happened to the cake but the Scot tweeted a nice message on his Twitter account: “Lovely touch and a big surprise to receive a cake on my first hole this morning, big thank you to everyone @InsperityInvtnl for making me feel so welcome”.
