TPC Boston, MA ….
Double Major winning Zach Johnson has described as a ‘coincidence’ a tweet that may suggest he will be travelling with the USA Team to next month’s Ryder Cup.
Johnson, and a veteran of five Ryder Cups, tweeted a picture Tuesday of the bag handed to him as a gift by one of his sponsors.
In the bag was a white 2018 USA Team Ryder Cup cap.
The picture of the cap in Johnson’s bag immediately had Twitter followers, including rival European Team captain, Thomas Bjorn, guessing as to whether Johnson had either been picked by USA Captain, Jim Furky to be a part of his team.
There were plenty of Twitter suggestions Johnson would be taking the vice-captaincy vacancy to be left by the expected selection Tiger Woods while others saw the strangely position USA Team cap to suggest Johnson may be handed a ‘wildcard’ pick.
Johnson was not aware of Bjorn’s ‘Nice cap, Zach’ tweet in explaining the photograph when stepping onto the TPC practice range late Wednesday ahead of Friday’s start to the $US 9m Dell Technologies Championship near Boston.
“No, I didn’t see Thomas’s tweet so I will have to check it out,” said Johnson.
“The thing is that I carry that cap with me as about 30 of us went to Jim’s house at TPC Sawgrass back in May and he gave us each one of the 2018 Ryder Cup caps.
“I haven’t been onto my Twitter account today so I’m unaware of all the suggestions that you mention such as I am taking Tiger’s place or that I will get a captain’s pick.
“No, no, nothing like that.
“So, there’s 30 of those caps out there, at least.”
Johnson was asked, and with everyone expecting Woods to be chosen next Tuesday by Furyk as one of his four picks, if he would welcome filling Woods’ place as a vice-captain.
“I would be an honour if that where to happen,” said Johnson.
