First Pro Career Ace Sends Lydia Ko In Frame For Olympic Games Gold.

A very first ace in her pro career has put World No. 1 Lydia Ko very much in frame for an Olympic Games gold medal.

The New Zealander aced the par three 8th hole on the Gil Hanse designed course on route to a blistering six under par 65 and helped Ko move into a share of second place with American Gerina Piller (68) on nine under par.

In fact, Ko played her outward nine in 29 and six under ahead of a bizarre inward half of nine straight pars in the tough, bright but windy conditions.

South Korean Inbee Park headed the women’s event birding 16 and 17 but then dropping a shot at the last in a round of a one under par 70 to be two shots clear of her rivals at 11-under par.

Ko’s ace was the second of the day and coming after China’s Xiyu Lin sent her tee shot to the bottom of the cup at the same hole earlier in the day.

“I would have loved to like done a dance or jumped up and down, but that situation, I think I was almost trying to cry, and then I realized, hey, I’ve got 11 more holes,” said Ko.

And in referring to ending with nine straight pars the Kiwi said:  “Overall I feel like I shot under par on the back nine, even though I shot even par.

“So even though I did shoot even, some of the pars out there, I felt like I made birdies.”
