Tiger Woods’ misery continues with the 14-time Major winner withdrawing after 12 agonizing holes on day one of the fog delayed Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
Woods had taken a double bogey at the par four second hole or the 11th of the course to be two over par but after playing his tee shot into the par three third hole or the 12th hole of his round he walked up onto the green and with his caddy picking up his ball.
He then advised playing partners Rickie Fowler and Billy Horschel his back was troubling him so much before being conveyed from the course in a motorised buggy.
However it was clear Woods was in agony as there was an earlier occasion when Horschel actually picked up his tee after Woods had driven off.
It is the third occasion in his past eight events Woods has withdrawn from an event and the last time being when he withdrew after hitting his tee shot at the ninth hole during last August’s WGC – Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.
“I guess my back started acting up between the two suspensions we had due to the fog,” said Woods.
“It just never loosened back up again. And when we went back out, it just got progressively lighter.
“It’s just frustrating that my back started shutting down like it did. I was ready to go today. I had a good warm-up session the first time around.
“Then we stood out here and I got cold, and everything started deactivating again. And it’s frustrating that I just can’t stay activated. That’s just kind of the way it is.”
After posting his worst ever professional round of an 82 less than a week ago in the Phoenix Open, Woods opened at Torrey Pines, and where he had captured his last of 14 Majors in 2008, with bogeys at hisfirst and third holes but then birdied the par four 16th or the seventh hole of his round to get back to one over par.
Woods then birdied his 10th to get back to level par but then doubled the next and clearly favouring his back.
It is yet another sad blow for the former long time World No. 1.
It means that Woods will not qualify for next month’s WGC – Cadillac Championship and an event he has won two years ago by four strokes from good friend, Steve Striker on the ‘Blue Monster’ at Doral in suburban Miami.
