Rory McIlroy Back To Competition ‘Duffing’ Carnoustie Opening Tee Shot.

Rory McIlroy’s return to normal competition after being a member of the victorious Ryder Cup team got off to an embarrassing start when he ‘duffed’ his opening tee shot on day one of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at Carnoustie.

The World No. 1’s iron tee shot headed left and travelling about 180 yards.

McIlroy simply laughed off the incident as he waited for his father, Gerry to tee off the forward tees before walking to his own ball on route to a superb par and on the course where in 2007 he was presented with the ‘Low Amateur’ award in the 2007 (British) Open Championship.

McIlroy’s shot rekindled memories of Tiger Woods doing exactly the same on the opening day of the 2012 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship when the 14-time Major winner’s ball went some 150-yards down the first hole of the National Course.

However to his enormous credit McIlroy made par before eventually signing for a one over par 73.

McIlroy is competing in the event for a first time since 2011 when he was runner-up to fellow Ulsterman Michael Hoey.

Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, who captured the first of three Majors in winning the 2007 (British) Open Championship at Carnoustie was among the early leaders event to be five under par after nine holes in bright and slightly windy conditions at Carnoustie and one of three courses hosting the tournament.
