Australia’s Jason Day produced one of the most remarkable pars seen for some time in Major Championship golf.
Day sent his tee shot way left at the 500-yard par four second hole that cleared a rain-swollen steam and buried itself in deep grass.
Day’s caddy, Col Swanton, shed he shoes and socks and waded into the stream and them up the opposite slope to being looking for the TaylorMade ball and really it was not till after slow-motion replay footage that Day’s ball was found.
Swanson crossed back over the stream before the 26-year old Day also shed his shoes and socks and headed down the back, across the stream and up the other side to play his second shot lying 167-yards from the flag.
However without a club, Swanton hurled a club across the water that was superbly caught by the double PGA Tour winner.
Day, with his trousers still rolled-up, played the short bare-footed and drawing huge applause when he managed to get the ball onto the fairway before it ran into the first cut of rough and now 77-yards from the pin.
The Aussie then delighted Valhalla patrons even more managing to get his third to 11 feet and then holing the putt for par.
Naturally, Day walked over Swanton with a huge smile on his face following one of the more remarkable pars seen in a Major for a long time.
Day went on to shoot a three under par 69 to end the round sharing fourth place at 10-under par and just three shots behind Rory McIlroy.
And Day later explained what happened at the second: “I was just too lazy to actually get my shoes thrown over to me. So I thought I either hit it in my bare feet or put my shoes back on but then have to take my shoes off.
“Also we were going to be behind (on the clock), way behind, so I may as well just hit it with no shores on. It was a great 4 there, a lucky 4.”
And McIlroy was asked what he was thinking when he saw Day wading through the stream ahead of playing the shot.
“I knew it was a water hazard, so I thought ‘why not just take a drop and hit it wherever’
“That would have been what I would have done and I would have made five or a six but then Jason made a four. It was a good effort. I know I wouldn’t have been walking through that river to get my ball, that’s for sure.
“You don’t know what’s in there (smiling).”
