JP Fitzfgerald, and the long-time caddy to Rory McIlroy, was disappointed when his tee shot at the famed par 3 17th island green was long and finding the water at the back of the Pete Dye designed green.
McIlroy surprised officials when he arrived on the 10th tee around 2pm local time Wednesday, and after advising PGA Tour officials he would not be available for a Media Center press conference.
His manager was contacted who advised that McIlroy would not be teeing up on the course ahead of his Thursday morning tee time.
But then imagine the surprise when McIlroy arrived on the 10th tee mid afternoon and asking to join the Swedish-born duo of Jonas Blixt and David Lingmerth.
Three hours later McIlroy walked off having birdied the par four 18th, and watched close up by his two closest friends Mitchell Tweedy and Ricky McCormick who also had been with McIlroy last week in Charlotte for the Wells Fargo Championship.
However when it came to the par three, 17th the 4-handicap Fitzgerald was not nervous.
He has been in the situation before in borrowing a club from McIlroy’s bag and trying to land his tee shot on the green about 138 yards away.
However Fitzgerald was quickly upstaged by Phil Hakey, and the caddy to Lingmerth.
But instead of taking a club to the ball, Hakey threw the ball to find the green. And it was revealed Hakey had been once an understudy to famed NFL great Tom Brady.
Hakey wasted no time and threw a golf ball that easily landed on the island green.
McIlroy threw his arms in the air in disbelief, and when thrown a ball by Fitzgerald tried to match the effort of Hakey but only managed to make a splash with his $5 Nike ball only managing to to make it halfway to the putting surface.
