We have long joked about the prospect of the list of golf courses appearing on the famed Claret Jug … St. Andrews, Royal Troon, Carnoustie, Trump International.
However with Donald Trump now having purchased Turnberry it may well become a reality.
So you can imagine in say 2021 when Turnberry could next stage golf’s oldest major that whoever is handed the Claret Jug there will be the inscription ….. 2021, John Doe, Trump International Turnberry.
And on top of news Trump had purchased Turnberry on the Scottish west coast comes further news to be confirmed tomorrow (Thursday) that Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey will not only host the 2017 US Women’s Open but the 2022 PGA Championship.
The announcement will be rubber stamped in Trump Tower in New York City.
“I really thought it would be a matter of time before we would get a Major Championship and I’m delighted,” said Trump.
“Bedminister is a golf course that will test all 156 players in the field, so we’re already looking forward to presenting a great golf course to host one of golf’s great Majors.”
It will mean the PGA of America will host three major golf events in the New York/New Jersey region with the staging of the 2019 PGA Championship and the 2024 Ryder Cup both at Bethpage Park.
On Tuesday, Trump confirmed he has purchased Turnberry playing a reputed £35.7m from the Dubai-based company, Leisurecorp and a subsidiary of the Dubai government.
The deal for the famed Ayrshire layout, that has played host to the 1977 Open Championship ‘Duel in the Sun’ and venue to Greg Norman’s 1986 Open victory, comes at a bargain price given in 2008, Leisurecorp paid £52 million for the resort.
