Day claimed his second victory in some three months despite having to play five extra holes to defeat Frenchman Victor Dubuisson in Sunday’s final in Arizona.

In fact, Day played six matches in five days and 113 holes to claim only his second PGA Tour counting individual event.

Day’s new World Ranking is a career high and it also means Australia now boasts two players in the top four.

Day, who moved up from 11th a week ago, had previously reached as high as seventh in the world (February 2012).

And fellow Queensland-born Aussie Greg Norman was delighted for Day in tweeting:

@SharkGregNorman Well done mate. Ur mind work was brilliant. Way to start what can only b a gr8 year ahead.
The 23-year old Dubuisson jumped seven spots from 30th to match his age at 23rd in the world while American Rickie Fowler, who finished third, moved from 56th to 38th, and is now eligible for the WGC-Cadillac Championship.

However double Major winning Rory McIlroy heads to this week’s Honda Classic now as No. 8 slipping from 7th in the world.

Here’s how the top 10 now looks:
