European No. 1 and FedExCup champion Henrik Stenson picked up some more hardware for his trophy case on Monday night at the Swedish Sports Awards.
Stenson won Male Sports Athlete of the Year, as well as the Radiosportens Jerringpris, which is voted on by the Swedish public and given for the top sporting accomplishment of the year.
Stenson is the only player to ever win both the FedExCup and the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, and in the same season.
The current World No. 3 was also named the European Tour’s Golfer of the Year late last season.
“Its great recognition for golf in Sweden to win these two awards and it shows the progression the sport is making,” Stenson was quoted as saying on the European Tour website. “I’m very thankful to all of the golf fans for voting for me and to be honoured in my own country is very special.”
The world No. 3 returns to action this week at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship
The only other golfer to have won Sweden’s male athlete of the year is Robert Karlsson, who won the European Tour’s Order of Merit in 2008 and Annika Sorenstam is the only other golfer to receive the Radiosportens Jerringpris, collecting the honor in 1995 and 2003.
