Craig Lee cancelled a trip home and instead was aboard a special charter flight bound for Dubai and this week’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
The Stirling golfer jumped three spots from outside the top-60 and into 58th place on the back of his final round 71 for a share of 36th place on 11-under par in the Turkish Airlines Open.
It will be Lee’s first appearance in the Tour’s $8m season-ended and the Scot could not be happier.
He said: “I had a flight booked to go home and I was provisionally booked on the 8pm charter flight tonight to Dubai.
“So it will be much nicer flying east than west, and I might even have a little sherry to celebrate and also help me sleep.”
Lee will join fellow Scots Stephen Gallacher (19th on the money list), Scott Jamieson (31st) and Marc Warren (32nd) in the cut event carrying a first prize some £900,000.
In fact, Lee who was £5,563 outside the top-60 teeing up in Turkey moved £6,593 inside the 60/
He said: “I was feeling pretty low at the turn as a bad drive down six went into the water and I then three-putted seven and didn’t get up-and-down at eight and before you know it I’ve dropped four shots.
“It seems that is the way it’s gone this week as I would hit one bad shot and then take a double but then I hit a lot of good shots but couldn’t hole the putts.
“So it’s been a strange week but I am pleased with the way I hung in over the back nine as I must have had a chance on every hole bar the 12th.
“But it’s definitely been satisfying given the circumstances and a lot different from a couple of years ago in being in 115th position to fighting to get inside the top-60, as that’s proper pressure. That’s your whole career on the line.
“But this today is the worst pressure I’ve experienced in my career and as it wasn’t much fun that back nine, it certainly a lot easier than trying to keep my card.”
Frenchman Victor Dubuisson upstaged some of the best golfers in the world, including idol Tiger Woods, to capture his first Tour title by two shots with a 24-under par tally.
The 23-year old, who once dated a Scottish girl living in St. Andrews, moved to top of the Ryder Cup points table, shooting a last round 69.
And when Dubuisson, a former World No. 1 ranked amateur, was quizzed who was his golfing idol he responded: “He was playing in the group ahead of me. Tiger Woods.”
Welshman Jamie Donaldson drew level at 22-under par with Dubuisson when he had a hole-in-one at the par three 16th that earned him one million air miles courtesy of the title sponsor.
England’s Justin Rose boosted hopes of finishing next week as European No.1 in shooting a last day 64 to share third place on 20-under par with Tiger Woods who birdied four of his closing five holes in a five under par 67.
Woods was returning home to Florida ahead of his final event of the year and his own World Challenge commencing on December 5th at Thousand Oaks in suburban L A.
He said: “I said 20-under par was going to win this week and it kind of ended up being that way.
“I’ve enjoyed coming here again to Turkey and while this year was totally different format to last year, this was a fun tournament.
“It was different in the fact that you had to make so many birdies.
“So I’m now hanging up the clubs for a little bit, so it’s going to be nice.”
