Jason Dufner

Dufner’s 63 ties the best score ever shot in a major. It has now been done 26 times between all four majors- 2/Masters, 4/U.S. Open, 8/Open Championship, 12/PGA Championship. The last player to shoot a 63 in a major was Steve Stricker at the 2011 PGA Championship. Sticker and Dufner were paired together during the first two rounds this week.

Dufner broke the Oak Hill Country Club course record with a 63 in the second round. The competitive course record of 64 on the East Course at Oak Hill was held by Ben Hogan (1942 Rochester Open), Curtis Strange (1989 U.S. Open) and Webb Simpson (2013 PGA Championship).

Dufner’s previous low round in a major is a 65 at the 2011 PGA Championship. Dufner’s 63 matches his career low round on TOUR. He has five other rounds of 63 on TOUR.

Dufner held a share of the lead after the second and third rounds at the 2011 PGA Championship. He ended up losing in a playoff to Keegan Bradley. His only other lead in a major was a share of the second-round lead at the 2012 Masters.

Dufner has converted two of his eight career second-round leads/co-leads on TOUR, including two of his last three.

Dufner matches the best first 36 hole score at the PGA Championship with a 131, which is shared with six other players.

Dufner is the first American to hold sole possession of the lead after the first three rounds of a PGA Championship since Steve Stricker (R1/2011).

Dufner entered the week No. 62 in the FedExCup rankings. He has made 15 of 18 cuts on TOUR, but only has two top 10 finishes. He had 14 combined top 10s in 2011 and 2012.

Dufner is No. 13 in the Presidents Cup standings. The top 10 U.S. players in the Presidents Cup standings through September 2, 2013 (Deutsche Bank Championship) will automatically qualify.  In addition, two Captain’s Picks will be made on September 4, 2013.

Matt Kuchar

Kuchar leads the TOUR with 23 consecutive cuts dating back to last year. He has made all 19 of his cuts this season. Adam Scott is second with 22 consecutive cuts on TOUR dating to last year.

Kuchar is No. 2 in the FedExCup standings. He has two wins this season at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and the Memorial.

Kuchar at the PGA Championship: 2002/MC, 2009/MC, 2010/T10, 2011/T19 and 2012/MC.

Kuchar missed the cut in eight straight majors from 1999 to 2007.

Adam Scott

Scott is looking for his second win of the season. The only other time he recorded multiple wins on TOUR was in 2004 (THE PLAYERS and Booz Allen Classic). Scott has nine career wins on TOUR.

Scott is No. 11 in the current FedExCup standings and has made all 12 of his cuts on TOUR this season. He finished T11 last year at the PGA Championship. He is the No. 1 ranked player for the International team in the Presidents Cup standings.

Four Australian’s have won the PGA Championship including Jim Ferrier (1947), David Graham (1979), Wayne Grady (1990) and Steve Elkington (1995).

There have been three players who have won the Masters and PGA Championship in the same season:

Jack Nicklaus    1963, 1975

Jack Burke, Jr.  1956

Sam Snead        1949

There are 17 players (30 times) with at least two major championship wins in one season.

Jim Furyk

Furyk’s only major win came at the 2003 U.S. Open. He has 16 total wins on the PGA TOUR, with his last three coming in 2010 when he won the FedExCup.

Furyk is No. 46 in the current FedExCup standings. He has only missed the TOUR Championship (2011) once in the last six seasons.

Justin Rose

Rose had a 29 on the front nine in the second round to tie the second best 9-hole score at the PGA Championship. Brad Faxon has a 28 in the final round in 1995.

Rose has made 11 of 13 cuts on TOUR this season with five top 10s and a win at the U.S. Open. Rose has five career wins on TOUR, including two wins in 2010 (the Memorial and AT&T National). Rose is looking for his 50th career top-10 finish this week. He ranks No. 7 in the current FedExCup standings.

Rose is one of four players on TOUR with at least one win in each of the last four seasons (2010-2013): Phil Mickelson (10), Dustin Johnson (6), Bill Haas (4) and Justin Rose (4).

Jim Barnes (1916 and 1919) is the only golfer from England to win the PGA Championship. He won the first two PGA Championships. The event was not contested in 1917 or 1918.

The following four players won the U.S. Open and PGA Championship in the same year:

Tiger Woods    2000

Jack Nicklaus    1980

Ben Hogan       1948

Gene Sarazen    1922

Webb Simpson, 72-64—136 (-4)

Simpson tied the Oak Hill Country Club course record with a 64 in the morning wave of the second round, but Jason Dufner shot a 63 in the afternoon to take over the course record. The competitive course record of 64 on the East Course at Oak Hill was also held by Ben Hogan in the 1942 Rochester Open and by Curtis Strange in the 1989 U.S. Open.

Simpson’s previous best round in a major was a 66 at both the 2011 U.S. Open/T14 and 2011 Open Championship/T16.
