American Shawn Stefani created history in grabbing the first-ever hole-in-one in a US Open staged at the Merion Club in Pennsylvania.
There has only been four US Open’s staged at the Merion Club – 1950, 1971, 1981 and this year – and Stefani is the first player to grab an ace.
And Stefani did it in style with the crowd roaring with delight as his tee shot kept rolling and rolling before just have enough momentum to find the bottom of the cup at the par three, 17th in an eventual closing round of 69.
While Stefani’s hole-in-one with a 4-iron at the 246-yard penultimate hole is the first ever at Merion it is the 43rd ace in the history of the US Open.
Stefani’s round saw him improved 16 shots from Saturday.
