Former Masters champion, Charl Schwartzel and England’s Lee Westwood did not have the best of starts to the 2013 Masters – each taking double bogey at the first hole at Augusta National.
Schwartzel played a wild drive well right of the fairway and with his ball deep into the trees.
Officials had to stop cart traffic running between the first hole and the Media Centre while the South African considered his options.
Then after a ruling Schwartzel played a left-handed shot with his wedge but then hit a tree branch in front of him and with his ball actually going backwards and some 30 feet back towards the tee but still in the tree line.
Schwartzel then managed to get back onto the fairway with his third on route to a double bogey ‘6’.
Two years ago Schwartzel birdied his closing four holes to win the 2011 Masters.
American Brandt Snedeker and England’s Justin Rose were the early leaders at two under par but only very early in their rounds.
One of the best performers was England’s David Lynn who was one under par after seven holes and in his very first Masters and only his third Major.
Lynn was runner-up in the last Major of 2012 – the US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island
