World No. 2 Rory McIlroy produced his second poorest round signing for a seven over par 79 on third day of the Masters.
McIlroy could only manage just birdie but also recorded three bogeys along with a 15th hole double bogey and an 11th hole triple bogey where the 23-year old where he found the water guarding the green with his third shot before needing three putts to get down.
He walked from the course having tumbled to a share of 44th place on five over par and a distant dozen shots off the lead.
It was McIlroy’s worst round since a closing 80 two years ago in his infamous ‘Masters Meltdown’.
“It’s disappointing not to be in contention on the final day, especially after such a good start,” he said.
“I was only a few off the lead going into 7th hole today and then all of a sudden I play through 7 through 11 in 5‑over par and basically my chances in the tournament are gone.
“ So it’s very disappointing, I feel like I was playing well and feel like I have been playing well coming in here and it’s just a frustrating day here.
“I felt good coming in here and I played really well the first couple of days. I grinded well. I was hitting the ball nicely.
“Today I started off good. I started off, I split the first fairway. The first six holes I played nearly perfectly. So I can’t really fault that. I just, the missed drive on 7 and I guess I missed three drives right, 7, 8, and 11, which sort of cost me.”
