Double Major winning John Daly was having such a tough time with the driver that after raking up a ’10’ at the par four third hole, or the 12th of his round, he presented the driver to a Tampa Bay Championship fan.
Daly signed the driver before parting with the longest club in his bag.
The former PGA and Open Championship winner was only two over par in total at the time.
His drive was down the left side but he then put three balls into the water before putting his eighth shot some 86 feet short of the green from where chipped to some two feet and holed out for ’10’.
Daly eventually walked off with a round of 81 for a 36-hole 11-over par tally.
Daly, a resident of nearby Clearwater, was competing in the event on what’s become an annual sponsor’s exemption.
In the week leading up to the tournament, he said: “It’s a weird golf course in a way that’s great. It gives you a chance to be aggressive, but it’s very penal if you don’t hit the fairways. The smarter you are off the tee, the better you will score.” He didn’t take his own advice to heart.”
