Rory McIlroy’s Emirates Airlines Australian Open Asking Price Sky High

It has been revealed that organisers of this week’s Emirates Australian Open had ear-marked World No. 1 Rory McIlroy to contest this week’s event in Sydney.

However once McIlroy stormed to his eight stroke success at Kiawah Island to win the PGA Championship the asking price for the 23-year old Northern Irishman to tee up in Australia soared.

McIlroy’s appearance fee was reputed to be $US 1m prior to winning his second Major but then doubled.

And that put the curly haired Northern Irishman out of reach for Australian Open promoters.

It was another slap in the face following negotiations with South African Ernie Els, whose appearance fee also rose sharply after he won this year’s British Open at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.

Getting the world’s top golfers to compete in the Australian Open is no easy task.

In the absence of McIlroy and Els, World No. 5 Justin Rose assumes the mantle as the 2012 Open’s top billing.

Rose had made his Australian Open debut in 1998 at Adelaide where he was on a horrible run of 21 missed cuts after turning pro months earlier and a day after finishing fourth in the British Open.
Six years ago, he returned to capture the co-sanctioned Australian Masters at Huntingdale.
Rose will tee up this week looking to continue a ‘Ryder Cup feel good factor’ and win for a second time since being a member of the victorious European Team.
Since the ‘Miracle at Medinah’ six players from the European Team have enjoyed success – Rose (Turkish Airlines World Golf Final), Peter Hanson (BMW Masters), Ian Poulter (WGC – HSBC Championship), McIlroy (DP World Tour Championship, Dubai), Martin Kaymer (Nedbank Golf Challenge) and Graeme McDowell (World Challenge).
