Charleston Charming PGA Championship Visitors.

You can’t be present in Charleston, South Carolina, and host this week for the 94th PGA Championship, and not take in the old world charm of this wonderful city.

Fortunately, time allowed for a visit into Charleston for a stroll the region along the riverfront where lies some wonderful old buildings, monuments and memorials.

When Charleston was founded back is 1670 it was originally named Charles Towne after then then King of England, Charles 11.  The town moved to its present location on Oyster Point in 1680 from a location on the west bank of the Ashley River known as Albemarle Point.

Charleston adopted its present name in 1783.

Charleston is known as The Holy City by virtue of the prominence of churches on the low-rise cityscape, as you will see in the photographs below.

In 1995 Charleston was named as the “best-mannered” city in the U.S.  Last year, Charleston was named  “America’s Sexiest City”, as well as “America’s Most Friendly.”

Earlier this year the city was named by Travel and Leisure magazine as the second best-dressed city in America, behind New York.
