Gareth Maybin is the latest top Irish player no longer on the books of Horizon Sports.
Less than a week after it was learnt triple Tour winning Michael Hoey had turned his back on the Dublin based outfit and now the Ballyclare born Maybin has done the same.
In fact, Maybin terminated his contract with Horizon Sport as at December 31st, 2011 while Hoey, who indicated last week in Morocco he had left the company, ended his relationship in February.
And like Hoey, Maybin is going to go it alone in arranging his own business affairs.
“I’ve left Horizon to set up my own company MSM (Maybin Sports Management), so I am doing it all myself now,” said Maybin in Sicily where he is contesting the Sicilian Open.
“I just feel running my own affairs is the best way for me.”
No doubt it’s a big blow to Horizon Sports who landed the prize scalp also late last year of reigning U.S. Open champion, Rory McIlroy.
But while Horizon can boast having the signature of one of the most exciting golfers in the world one now has to pose the question: ‘Why have Hoey and Maybin have turned their backs on Horizons?’
In speaking with Hoey last week in Agadir he indicated he was thinking of quitting the company long before McIlroy had come on board but then the arrival of McIlroy, and the attention he requires on both sides of the Atlantic, did change the ‘business’ attention Hoey indicated he was not receiving.
Maybin is one of a few Irish players yet to taste success on the European Tour but he did go close to secure success in the 2009 South African Open and in just his fourth event after joining the main European Tour from the secondary Challenge Tour.
And the 31-year old Ulsterman again highligthed his enormous potential in recording two second place finishes in 2010 – Ballantines Championship and Andalucian Masters.
