Simpsons Golf Shop – Carnoustie Landmark Up For Sale

One of the most famed landmarks in Carnoustie – Simpsons Golf Shop – is up for sale.

Simpsons Golf Shop, which was established in 1883, is being sold as a going concern.

There really no missing Simpsons with its multi-coloured umbrella like roof on a visit to Carnoustie given it is located directly opposite the 18th hole of the Championship golf course, and has been a golfing icon since the shop opened there in 1920.

There's hardly missing Simpsons Golf Shop when playing Carnoustie.

Located a 6 Links Parade, Carnoustie  the building is believed to be the second oldest of its type in the UK.

The business was started by club-maker Robert Simpson in 1883 who was one of six brothers, Robert came from a very golf-orientated family.

His brother Archie is credited with the development of the ‘Carnoustie Swing’, from which modern techniques can trace their lineage, and along with his other brothers had several good showings in Scottish tournaments.

Robert was just 20 when in 1883 he was appointed head professional, club and ball maker, instructor and greens keeper for the Dalhousie Golf Club.

He worked with Old Tom Morris in the redesign of the Carnoustie links and is also credited with having a hand in the designs of Royal Aberdeen, Crieff, Edzell, Oban, Linlithgow, Alyth and Blair Atholl.

Brother Jack Simpson won the 1884 Open Championship by four strokes at Prestwick whereas Robert and Archie had several good performances in the Open, the highlight being Archie’s runners-up spots in 1885 at St Andrews and in 1890 at Prestwick.

The Simpsons were also renowned as world class golf instructors and many of their proteges moved to the United States where they in turn made an impact as golfers and teachers.

In 1920 the shop as it exists today was opened on the corner of Links Parade, and started trading as Simpsons Golf Shop, whereas before it had been known as Charles Brand Clubmakers.

The shop was fully refurbished in 2009 and opened by the BBCs renowned commentator, Peter Alliss.

Gavin Russell, from Shepherd chartered surveyors, said: “The sale represents a unique opportunity to acquire and expand a well-established business, rich with golfing folklore, with a well-established client base and tremendous potential.”

“Simpsons will be sold as a going concern and the shop will continue trading in the meantime.
