The Ryder Cup is heading to Singapore, yes the tiny island nation of Singapore!
The gleaming gold trophy is travelling first class tomorrow (TUES) and on it’s first visit to the country where there is probably more golf courses in such a small area than any other place on the planet perhaps aside from St. Andrews and Mission Hills in China.
However the trophy with be in good hands as victorious European Team captain, Colin Montgomerie will be its custodian on the near 15-hour flight from London.
Monty’s been invited by BMW to be special guest of honour at the now annual BMW sponsored World Amateur Championship taking place at the Sentosa course in Singapore and venue each year for the Barclay’s Singapore Open.
The BMW World Amateur is taking place from March 5th to 10th and Monty will conduct a number of clinics during his stay and also be on hand to hand out the prizes to the winners.
Monty is no stranger to the splendid Sentosa layout where fellow Scot Peter Downie is the Director of Golf.
Monty returns to Singapore with a superb record of achievement having competed in three Singapore Masters winning the co-sanctioned event in 2004 after finishing third in 2001 and a week after he had captured the Australian Masters in Melbourne.
Monty was then runner-up to England’s Nick Dougherty in 2005 while he has teedup in the last two Barclays Singapore Opens.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing and competing in Singapore though it’s going to be strange heading there this time knowing I’m not in a tournament,” he said.
“However Marco from BMW asked if I would be interested in being present and given I’m not into the Cadillac Championship I thought ‘why not’ so I’m heading to Singapore,” he said.
“It will be great to see how the amateurs perform and I’ll be hosting a few clinics and they’re always fun, so it should be a good few days before my next event, the Andalucian Open.”
It’s not the first time Monty has travelled long haul with the Ryder Cup as late last year he made a visit to Afghanistan to show off the trophy to British and Coalition troops.
