McIlroy’s View At The Top Shortlived.

Luke Donald ensured Rory McIlroy’s ‘veiw’ from the top of the World Rankings was short-lived in capturing the Transitions Championship in Florida.

Donald displayed his all his brilliance in playing a superb shot from the rough to within just feet of the first extra play-off hole of a four-man play-off and then sink the birdie putt to capture his fifth PGA Tour title and regain the World No. 1 crown.

The Englishman lost the title when McIlroy captured the Honda Classic.

But in sending a congratulatory text message to McIlroy, Donald indicated for the young Northern Irishman:  “Well done!  Enjoy the view”.

And McIlroy revealed he was watching coverage of Donald’s stunning success as he tweeted saying: “Well, I enjoyed it while it lasted.  Congrats Luke, impressive performance.”

Well McIlroy had just two weeks enjoying the view with Donald regaining the No. 1 title he first achieved in defeating Lee Westwood at last May’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

“Well, obviously it feels great to win and to get back to No. 1,” said Donald.

“My focus this week was to try and win, and that’s kind of my focus every week.  I wasn’t really thinking about the World Rankings.

“So glad to have got myself back in position and given myself a chance.

“It was a slow start to the year, but gained a lot of confidence from last week’s result, and just every day, I felt like I was getting closer to how I want to hit the ball and how I want to feel over the putts.

“So it was nice to sneak out a win.”

Footnote –

Biggest mover on the World Rankings was Frenchman Julien Quesne who captured a maiden European Tour title in winning the Andalucian Open.

Quesne jumped from 322nd in the world and into 183rd and just two spots behind good friend and fellow Andalucian Open winner, Thomas Levet.

Levet was among those French colleagues who soaked Quesne in champers yesterday.
