Clarke & Ballesteros Denied Opportunity To Compete In Majorca

The cancellation of the Ibedrola Open in Majorca has spoilt the opportunity Darren Clarke, the current Open Champion and Javier Ballesteros, the 21-year old son of former European great Seve Ballesteros to compete in the same touranment.

The Race to Dubai event set to be again staged at the Pula Golf Club has been withdrawn from the Tour’s schedule due to a lack of a sponsor.

Clarke’s three shot success at the Pula Golf Club ended a three-year winless drought and eventually led to success two months later in the British Open at Royal St. Georges.

Ballesteros, who plays off a handicap of 0.0, had been invited by tournament host Jose Maria Olazabal to compete as an amateur and on the one-year anniversary of his father’s passing.

“It’s a bit disappointing as I was looking forward to playing in Majorca,” said Javier Ballesteros.

“I very much looking forward to it and while I wish I could play in other events I don’t know when I may play.”

Ballesteros, and whose younger brother Manuel plays off a handicap of 3.5, indicated he has two years remaining in studying law and will then consider whether he will turn professional.

“I will try to be a professional when I finish my law degree but I’m still not sure what I am going to do,” he said.

“I am playing some amateur tournaments in Spain and I will probably play about 10 big amateur tournaments this year.”

And despite being a son of one of the greatest players to compete in golf, Ballesteros indicated he feels no such pressure when competing.

“No, I feel no pressure on me and for the moment I just try to go out there and play for fun,” he said.

The Maderia Islands Open has now been moved to replace the Iberdola Open.
