Schwartzel & The Most Travelled Green Jacket Ever.

Masters champion, Charl Schwartzel believes an Augusta National member’s green jacket has not travelled as far as it has this year on the back of the champion South African.

Schwartzel proudly wore the jacket on Tuesday night to a Bangkok flood relief charity fund-raiser ahead of this week’s season-ending Asian Tour’s Thailand Golf Championship.

At the gala function, Schwartzel was thrilled when a local Bangkok businessman pledged 1m Baht (Euro 34,000) for a signed Schwartzel Masters flag.

Charl Schwartzel has travelled to five continents since being fitted with the green jacket

Since winning the Masters by two strokes courtesy of four brilliant closing hole birdies, the fame green jacket has accompanied Schwartzel to every continent in the world with the exemption of South American and Antarctica.

Never before has an Augusta green jacket travelled extensively as the one presented to Schwartzel last April.

Hours after being fitted with the green jacket by Phil Mickelson, Schwartzel stepped aboard a private jet wearing the green jacket and bound for Kuala Lumpur and the Maybank Malaysian Open.

He delighted hundreds who attended a Pro-am dinner that week in arriving at the function wearing the most famour jacket in all of golf for a first occasion in public.

Schwartzel then triumphantly returned home and wearing the jacket to the South African club where he honed his Masters winning game.

From there he packed the jacket in his suitcase and returned to the States where the green jacket appeared on numerous occasions.

In May, he proudly wore the jacket as he stood alongside fellow Springbok golfer, Louis Oosthuizen along with U.S. Open winner, Graeme McDowell and PGA champion, Martin Kaymer at the annual European Tour’s ‘Player of the Year’ black tie dinner ahead of the BMW PGA Championship.

Since then Schwartzel has taken the jacket with him to countries like Bermuda, China, Australia, along with last week in Dubai and now in Thailand, and probably the first ever visit by a reigning Augusta National champion.

“It’s been a fantastic year and every time I wear the green jacket you realise what an achievement it was,” he said.

“To see people’s eyes light up when I wear the jacket to functions is amazing.

“I wore it to the dinner on Tuesday and everybody was just so pleased and to think how wearing a jacket can make people so happy and excited makes it all worth while.

“And particularly, as Tuesday evening was all about raising money for the flood victims here in Bangkok.

“I signed a flag and a putter and to see the reaction on people’s faces is special and just shows you the stature of winning the Masters or any of the Major’s.”

Schwartzel’s long season ends this week but he has just a fortnight off from competition before returning early in the New Year for the Joburg Open and Vovlo Champions event and both in his homeland.

“It’s not much time off but I will enjoy the short break”, he said.

“I will restart my year at the Joburg Open and then the Champions event at Fancourt so it will be a good as I get to play at home and I also get to play a few European Tour events early in the year.

“I will then go to Abu Dhabi, and what is nice about starting in South Africa, is that by the time you get to Abu Dhabi you are pretty fresh and already warmed-up for the start of the new season.

“A lot of the guys will still be trying to work out what is going on  and they’ll be coming from the European winter, so I will have like a head start on a lot in the field.”

And when will Schwartzel start getting into Masters mode?

“I won’t start thinking about Augusta until I get back to the States and probably about Bay Hill time so around about a month before I will start having Augusta on my mind,” he said.
