Darren Clarke said he’s also in doubt as he needs to be present on the Sunday of the final day of the Vivendi to greet those attending a charity fund-raiser in Scotland.
And Triple Major winning Padraig Harrington and former Pebble Beach winning hero, could still be tied up with the FedEx Cup series.
McIlroy cited an extensive run of events right up to a week before Christmas as he is competing this week in Switzerland and next week in Holland with then a fortnight off before 12 weeks ‘on the road’ as he described.
“I would love to be playing the Vivendi as I had a fabulous time two years ago,” he said.
“But after these two weeks I am taking two weeks off and the Vivendi falls during those two weeks, and I’m only doing that as I am then playing 12 weeks in a row and right up until Chirstmas.
“I am not going to get home until about the 22nd or 23rd of December. I’ll then have two weeks at home and then back over to Dubai.”
McIlroy will then return from the break to play events in Scotland, Bermuda, Shanghai in China, Singapore, Japan, Hainan Island in China, Hong Kong, Dubai and a new event starting on December 15th in Bangkok, Thailand.
McIlroy and McDowell played under McGinley’s leadership two years ago and winning by five points against a Continental team.
Clarke is hosting a two-day charity fund raising day at the Archerfield course to the east of Edinburgh on the Monday and Tuesday after the Vivendi Seve Trophy concludes on September 18th.
“When I set out my schedule I didn’t know I was going to win The Open, and things have now changed and I am into the Vivendi team,” he said.
“But with the charity day I have arranged for the Monday and Tuesday after the Vivendi, I promised a lot of people I would be there on the Sunday before to meet them.
“However because the Vivendi this year is all about honouring Seve I am doing my utmost to play, but then I don’t like breaking promises I’ve made to people who I said I would be there to meet at Archerfield on the Sunday.”
Also likely to miss the Vivendi Seve Trophy, Ian Poulter and Justin Rose.
However Paul Casey, who is fourht on the GB & I ‘Race to Dubai’ points table, has expressed an interest in competing.
