Seve Inspires Young Scot On DayThree Spanish Open

A moving minute’s tribute to Seve Ballesteros inspired rookie Scott Jamieson to birdie three of his closing four holes on day three of the Spanish Open in Barcelona.

The 27-year old Glaswegian was struggling early on when play was halted mid-afternoon in tribute to the passing of the five-time Major winning Ballesteros.

Jamieson, who was on the ninth fairway, resumed to grab six straight pars and then three birdies to end his round of 72 to move to a share of second place at six under par.

“Strangely, there was no more bogeys after the minute’s silence,” said Jamieson.

“But it’s just been a very moving day and it’s the first time in my career I’ve worn a black ribbon in memory of anyone plus I watched footage this morning before teeing off of Seve on U-Tube and he was some player.

“Also I watched footage this morning before teeing off of Seve on U-Tube and he was some player.

“And while he was winning Majors before I was born, and while I cannot comment on his golf career, he has inspired everybody.

“Even as a junior when you’re practicing your short game, you’re always Seve.”

Jamieson realises too, given the Spanish Open was the last of Ballesteros’ 50 European Tour wins, that whoever wins the event it is going to be an emotional occasion.

South African Thomas Aiken (72) leads by two at under par from Jamieson, French rookie Romain Watel (72), Dane Anders Hansen (69) and overwhelming local Barcelona favourite Pablo Larrazabal (73).
