R & A Loses Key Man

In a big surprise the person responsible for running golf’s oldest Major has announced his retirement with immediate effect.
David Hill is Chairman of the R & A Championship Committee and has been in charge of The Open for the past 30 years.
David Hill – No longer working for the R & A

It also seems a strange move on the part of Hill given plans are all ready well in train for this year’s championship at Royal St. Georges starting on July 14th

R & A CEO Peter Dawson said in a simple statement:  “With David’s retirement, we are losing a man of vast experience, whose immense contribution to the development of The Open has been invaluable .

“He leaves us with our thanks and very best wishes.”

And when quizzed who will replace Hill, Dawson added:  “The R & A Championship Department will now report to me until a more permanent reorganisation is announced.”

Hill was involved with every facet of The Open from the championship course set-up, exhibition infrastructure and even acting as on-course announcer.

Dawson and Hill was one of the strongest organisation pair in the world of golf and Hill’s departure will leave a huge void at the R & A.

Whether or not Hill returns to golf remains to be seen.
