Frenchman Raphael Jacquelin created history in capturing the inaugural Sicilian Open.
The bearded Frenchman held on to win by a stroke at 12-under par from England’s Anthony Wall when the event finally concluded early Monday morning after high winds had delayed play on Sunday by some two-and-a-half hours.
It is believed the 36-year old Swiss based Jacquelin had promised to shave his beard off should he capture a third Race to Dubai title and a first in nearly four years.
“It feels great to win again,” said Jacquelin.
“But it was not easy as Anthony made a couple of birdies and put the pressure on me right from the start.
“It was a good fight between the two of us and I that helped us to play the way we did because we were always close and playing together turned it into a real fight.
“I enjoyed it and as there can only be one winner, I am glad it was me.”
Jacquelin earned a first prize cheque of Euro 166,660 along with a start in November’s WGC – HSBC Championship in Shanghai.
His victory is Jacquelin’s first in nearly three years and also has seen him jump to 84th on the World Rankings.
As well, Jacquelin’s success is a huge lift for France’s campaign to win the rights to host the 2018 Ryder Cup with the announcement to be made on 17th May, 2011.
