Woods Bursts Back into Contention in Dubai

Tiger Woods burst back in contention to end a 14-month winless drought with a six under par 66 on day two of the Dubai Desert Classic.

Woods moved to seven under par and tied with Briton and first round leader Rory McIlroy, as McIlroy was heading down the first hole to commence his round.

The current World No. 3 ranked Woods didn’t drop a shot in his best score since a similar 66 also on day two of last December’s Chevron World Challenge, an event Woods hosts each year at Thousand Oaks in Los Angeles.

Woods commenced his Dubai Desert Classic second round at one under par before birdies at his third and fourth holes.

He pared the next six holes before three birdies in a four-hole stretch from his 11th hole to go to seven under par.

The double Dubai Classic past champion then pared his remaining four holes.

World No. 1 Lee Westwood kept in touch with Woods despite a final hole bogey in carding a two-under par 70 to finish on five under par.

And the third member of the group, World No. 2 Martin Kaymer recorded four birdies, including one on the last, but also two bogeys in a 70 to be tied with Westwood on four under par.

Earlier in their round, Chief Referee John Paramour warned the trio of slow play.
