A few of the media attending the Andalucian Open met a real character on Saturday night and as it turned out, he’s a bit of a celebrity. Alan Laud along with wife, Susan run the Bus Stop Bar in Torremolinos and just across the road from the Sol Principe, and one of the officials hotels for the week. The bar is lined with nearly 100 model buses, bus signs and other bus memorabilia, and also is a shrine to Alan’s favourite football team – Manchester United. However it was not the buses but the ...

Langer To Miss Masters For First Time Since 1983

Double U.S. Masters winning Bernhard Langer will be absent from Augusta National next fortnight for a first time since 1983. The German underwent surgery on his left thumb last Wednesday after injuring it in a biking mishap. He issued a statement saying:  “I’m obviously disappointed the injury occurred, but especially disappointed with such an important part of my schedule coming up, including the Masters. “I do, however, appreciate the fine care of Dr. (Andrew) Weiland and his team, and ...

Clarke Adds Momentum To Monty’s 2014 Captaincy Call Up

Darren Clarke has added some momentum to Colin Montgomerie’s remarks that he would accept the 2014 Gleneagles Ryder Cup leadership ‘if invited’. This is despite Paul McGinley seemingly the favourite to lead Europe in three years time on the Scottish Highlands course. However former K. Club vice-captain Sandy Lyle remarked earlier this week that he believed the European Tour may very well ask Monty if he wants the job. The competitiveness and desire is still well within Monty and whether it ...

Lowry Not Distracted By Noisy Aircraft Nor Nosy Nudists

Despite the double distraction of noisy aircraft and maybe some nosy nudists, Shane Lowry is singularly focussed on performing well in the Andalucian Open. Busy Malaga Airport can be seen from most parts of the Parador Malaga course but for those competing in the Miguel Angel Jimenez hosted event what they don’t want to see is any private parts on display on the beach immediately behind the practice range and 12th tee. That was the scenario last year when an elderly male stood behind the high ...

Monty declares: ‘I would welcome captaining 2014 Ryder Cup side in Scotland’

In a surprise turnaround Colin Montgomerie indicted he would be prepared to accept the captaincy of the  2014 European Ryder Cup side. Montgomerie had indicated shortly after leading Europe to victory last October in Wales that he was not interested in agani captaining Europe. However Monty has now reversed that decision following comments by fellow Scot Sandy Lyle. Lyle said: “I wouldn’t put it past the European Tour to invite him (Monty) back again as he knows the course, the surrounding ...

Miguel Angel Jimenez – The Perfect Host

Miguel Angel Jimenez has bent over backwards to ensure his European Tour colleagues get the best of everything in this week’s Andalucian Open. This is the fifth year Jimenez has played host to the event being played on the seaside Parador Malaga course. The course opened in 1928 and is just a short drive in Jimenez’s Ferrari from where he has lived. “It has always been my goal to have a European Tour event here in Malaga where I grew-up and still live,” he said. “So ...

Westwood To Step-Up Masters Preparations

World Number Two Lee Westwood intends stepping-up his U.S. Masters preparations by spending this weekend at Augusta National. Westwood, along with long-time caddy Billy Foster, will get a first look at the Georgia golfing gem in nearly 12 months since the Briton golfer ended in second place and three shots behind Phil Mickelson. Westwood went into last year’s closing round one stroke clear of Mickelson but found himself having to play second fiddle to the American who carded a last day 67 to Westwood’s ...
