Augusta National Remembers Furman Bisher.

In a wonderful tribute Augusta National officials have remembered the late Furman Bisher. Furman was the long time golf correspondent for the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper who passed away on March 12th at age 93. Furman had covered more Masters than other journalist. He was a wonderful individual who will be sadly missed.

Janis Joplin – Unique In The History Of Rock & Roll

Due to thunderstorm delays at the Shell Houston Open I asked a number of colleagues where you could spend the day away from the golf course without too much driving Having previously visited the USS Texas, the NASA Space Centre and last year heading down to Galveston, it was suggested I could pop down to the Port Arthur region. And while Port Arthur has obviously seen far better days it was the town where Janis Joplin was born and where she went to school before climbing onto the international stage ...

Mike Weir – Not Ready To Just Make Up The Masters Numbers.

Canadian Mike Weir declared he is not heading to Augusta National this week simply to make up the Masters numbers. When Tiger Woods fitted Weir with the Augusta National members jacket he became only the second southpaw golfer to win at golf’s highest level in defeating American Len Mattice in a 2003 play-off and 40 years after New Zealand left-hander Bob Charles won the British Open. Weir became the first Canadian male to win a Major and some 35 years after Sandra Post brilliantly captured ...

Golden Triangle Veterans Memorial Park, South-East Texas.

On a rare day off from covering golf I grabbed the opportunity to see a little bit more of Texas. On a glorious Saturday morning I found myself heading east along Texas highway 90 when I came across the Triangle Veterans Memorial Park located less than two hours drive south-east of Houston and just outside the town of Orange in the south-east of the state and not far from the Louisana border. The memorial park was not hard to miss located right beside the highway and the visit was extremely ...

Rudy’s Restaurant – Savouring A Taste Of Texas

I had the pleasure during this year’s Shell Houston Open to visit Rudy’s Restaurant in northern Houston. There is plenty of Texas ‘theme’ restaurants scattered all about Houston but there’s none like Rudy’s – it’s Texas to the bone! And thanks to Art Stricklin (Sports Illustrated) for arranging as he and I along with Bill Nichols (Dallas Morning News) had a good night savouring a real tast of Texas. As Art suggested:  “There’s no fun being ...

McIroy Shrugs Off Excess Luggage Heading Down Magnolia Says McDowell & Two Former Masters Champions.

Rory McIlroy’s closest companion on tour and two former August National winning heroes believe McIlroy will carry little emotional baggage with him down Magnolia Lane and into next week’s Masters. Graeme McDowell is probably McIlroy’s closest companion on Tour and more so since McIlroy joined G Mac late last year in the same Dublin based management stable. But there was little McDowell could do at the sight a year ago when, with one arm already in a first Masters green jacket, McIlroy ...

Gareth Maybin Second Player To Turn His Back On Horizon Sports.

Gareth Maybin is the latest top Irish player no longer on the books of Horizon Sports. Less than a week after it was learnt triple Tour winning Michael Hoey had turned his back on the Dublin based outfit and now the Ballyclare born Maybin has done the same. In fact, Maybin terminated his contract with Horizon Sport as at December 31st, 2011 while Hoey, who indicated last week in Morocco he had left the company, ended his relationship in February. And like Hoey, Maybin is going to go it alone in ...
