Could the sight mid-Friday morning of some of the leading administrative figures of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship inspecting the stunning Yas Links course suggest the tournament is moving there in 2013?
Giles Morgan, HSBC Head of Group Sponsorship, along with IMG’s Peter German and Mark Webster plus other IMG officials jumped in a six-seat buggy for a tour of the Kyle Phillips designed course.
This year’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is the seventh edition of the tournament since American Chris DiMarco came to the UAE capital in 2006 and with his wife acting as caddy to become the first to be handed the gleaming falcon trophy.
Morgan is on record indicating the event will move from the National Club course and that an annoucement is expected to be made at the close of the event.
Yas Links has only been opened a year but already is being acclaimed as the now best course, and if not the toughest, in the UAE.
Yas Links General Manager, Chris White indicated the course is a possibility to host the 2013 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship but cannot confirm if in fact it will move.
White is more concerned with Monday’s showcase event at Yas Links that will play host for a second year running to the Emirates Airline Invitational.
Some 55 pros, who will have competed in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, will be in attendance headed by 2010 victorious Ryder Cup Captain, Colin Montgomerie.
