Erin Hills, Wisconsin …
Matthew Fitzpatrick faced a bizarre sit down written test ahead of his third U.S. Open and a second as a pro having teed-up in 2014 still an amateur and as the reigning U.S. Amateur champion.
Fitzpatrick answered an invitation from FOX TV to be part of a U.S Open preview and set in a room that was a mock-up of a typical Wisconsin farming barn with bales of hay lying about while there was a tractor in one corner and the U.S Open trophy sitting on a wooden crate in another.
Then at the end of it all the young Englishman was asked to sit behind a small school desk and handed a three page list of questions on the host course.
Fitzpatrick looked over the few questions on the front page before the producer asked him to provide the look of being happy to finish the exam
It was then I asked his some real questions about his aspirations this coming week
“The golf course is in great shape and having played in a few USGA events in my career they always do a great job”, he said.
“What they are do good at, is that take it to the edge where it is almost unplayable but then that it what makes it so tough and that is why the championship is go great.
“So, they always do it properly and it is always a fantastic week but Erin Hills is easily the widest USGA course I have seen.
“And growing-up a U.S. Open golf course to me would be long and tight, and very thick rough so I like the set-up and looking forward to the week as it so different to the regular Tour events.
“They are just more of a challenge and more enjoyable and that is what I like about the week as you are not going to be the only one struggling out there”.
