Orlando, FL ..
After opinions the past few months on both sides of the Atlantic triple Major winning Padraig Harrington has decided to have his troublesome shoulder operated on.
Harrington had sought four opinions along on a trapped nerve in his left shoulder during the recent Genesis Open in suburban Los Angeles and advising Bernie after remarkably posting five birdies in his second round at the Riviera course: “It looks as though I’m going to need an operation but the decision is when. I am playing next week and then I have a window where I have a few week’s off to have the operation.
“The good thing is that I am told the operation is pretty straight forward where they shave down part of my shoulder.”
“I’ve had four different opinions so far about my shoulder and with the specialist I saw on Monday saying I do need surgery and with another saying I need an injection while the Tour’s physio staff have also been looking after me”.
A week later he missed the halfway cut in the following week’s Honda Classic, and an event he won in 2015, the Dubliner headed home for further advice.
And that advice now continues to be not other option but surgery and confirming that via two messages on his Twitter page:
“Sorry I’m missing out on honouring Arnold Palmer’s legacy at the @APinv this week. But I’m going to have neck surgery on a trapped nerve”
and
“Having surgery on a trapped nerve between C6 and C7. Looks like I’ll be out for 8 to 10 weeks. Targeting a comeback at the Memorial in May”.
Harrington had picked up the injury sleeping on a ‘bad’ pillow while representing Ireland at the Olympic Games last October in Rio.
He commenced his 2017 season at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in California and sought to protect the concern by not competing in the Wednesday Pro-Ams doing this on a number of occasions while at the Genesis Open he also went into the event not playing a practice round.
Of course, Harrington’s biggest concern is missing out on returning to this year’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale when in 2008 he shrugged off a then foot injury and fears of withdrawing to go on and retain his Open Championship title.
‘That would be a disaster to miss out on Birkdale and miss out on the PGA (Championship) as well, during the summer,” he said.
