Russell Knox Facing Ryder Cup Decision Whether Or Not To Play Wyndham Championship

Scotland’s top-ranked Russell Knox faces the agonising decision whether or not to contest next week’s Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.

Knox is currently one place outside of qualifying automatically for the European Ryder Cup team but is saying he was not due to compete in Charlotte.

However with qualifying off the European Ryder Cup ‘World’ points list to conclude on Sunday August 21st then Knox may elect to enter the event being defended by USA Captain, Davis Love 111.

Know spoke with BBC Scotland’s Brian McLauchlin about the tough decision the Florida-based Scot is facing and with a decision needing to be made by 5pm Friday US time whether or not he will compete in the $US 5.4m event taking place again on the Sedgefield course.

Russell Knox facing tough decision whether or not to tee up in the Wyndham Championship and his final shot at automatic European Ryder Cup selection.

“It’s my decision if I play Wyndham or not,” he said.

“I could play Wyndham, and there are no guarantees I’ll play well. It could be a total waste of time if I go and miss the cut.”

Knox has been in contact with European Team Captain Darren Clarke, who will announce his three ‘wildcard’ picks from the Ballroom of the Wentworth Club on Tuesday August 30th, but has yet to make a decision on Wyndham.

“We had a brief conversation about my schedule in the next few weeks to try and make the team outright, but I haven’t finalised or made my decisions yet,” he also said to Brian at BBC Scotland.

“I wasn’t planning on playing Wyndham. I was going to take two weeks off, and then this came up. I’ll probably take a couple more days to think about it and assess if it’s the right thing to do.

“I feel I’ve done almost all I can; I wish I could have automatically qualified for the team already.

“I don’t want to have to wait for a captain’s selection; he can pick whomever he wants, so it’s not necessarily going to be me.

“It would be nice to make the team straight up, but at the same time I feel I’ve rolled my dice, shown my cards and put everything into it I can. And if I decide not to play, I’ll know I’ll have given it 100%.”
