Crail, Scotland ….Along with the R & A Clubhouse, the Swilcan Bridge and the refurbished Hamilton Hall Hotel, the Dunvegan Hotel is a St. Andrews landmark.
The Dunvegan, located just a wedge shot from the 18th green on the Old Course, is up for sale with a purchase price of £2.9m.
Texas-born Jack Willoughby and his Scottish-born wife, Sheene have proudly owned the Dunvegan for 22 years and during that time some of the greats of golf have lined the bar or sat outside enjoying the ambience of this Scottish golfing hotel gem.
Sheena reckons there’s been upwards of 30 Major winners, including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods, to have walked through the doors of the Dunvegan.
I recall driving pass the Dunvegan one day and seeing Palmer and IMG founder, Mark McCormack enjoying a pint out front, and what I still describe, sitting in the best seats in St. Andrews.
As well, the likes of Neil Armstrong, and the first man to set foot on the moon, plus Clint Eastwood and former US President George Bush have graced the Dunvegan.
“We’ve had the time of our lives running the hotel and have loved meeting and hosting so many golfers, golfing celebrities and our true core customers, the not so famous golfing visitors, alike”, said Sheena.
“You just can’t describe the atmosphere at the height of the season, but the place just seems to have a magnetic pull of people from all four corners of the world.”
