‘G Mac’s’ was his fourth top-10 finish in the event while his fifth place result was good enough to move up one place to 7th on the FedEx Cup Play-Off standings. and to be assured of teeing up at Trump Doral.

“I was a little jittery as it was the first time on the stage this year,” he said.

“But then it’s mission accomplished as I’ve qualified for next week and I’m now assured of playing all four events on the Florida Swing.

“I need momentum. I need more golf and I need a little bit of consistency.

“This is like week one for me given I was not prepared physically or mentally to go to Hawaii while I went to Dubai with the flu.

“So this is my third go at starting this season and nice to kind of get out of the gates now and get off and running.”

As well, McDowell celebrates news his wife is due to give birth in August to the couple’s second child he should jump from 73rd to close to 55th on the World Rankings and if so, also a place in the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship in Austin, Texas a fortnight ahead of the Masters.

“It’s huge,” McDowell said after outscoring the in-form and final round playing partner Rickie Fowler by two strokes.

“In this game we talk about process a lot but we need results to back us up and tell us we are on the right path.

“I have been hitting it unbelievably in practice so it is nice to come out on the course and get some reward.

“I can pencil Doral in now – a course I like – and we can keep grinding. I am really positive about a lot of aspects of my game.

“As well, it means I am now confirmed for all four Florida Swing events and that was the goal coming here to PGA National at the start of the week.”

McDowell was asked if he would be taking Monday off before heading south to Miami but confirmed he is competing in a Pro-Am at the nearby famed Seminole Clubl
