Spieth, Clarke & Yang Enticed To Contest 2016 Singapore Open Same Week As Commercial Bank Qatar Master

Major champions Jordan Spieth, Darren Clarke and Y E Yang have been enticed to contest next January’s SMBC Singapore Open.

Spieth will be competing the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship a week earlier and will then travel south to Singapore for the Asian and Japan Tour co-sanctioned event a week later.

As well, it means the current World No. 1 will miss the Farmers Insurance Open on the PGA Tour schedule and no doubt also resulting in Spieth being afforded special release from the PGA Tour to compete first in the UAE and then a week later in Singapore.

In contrast, Clarke is no stranger to competing in Singapore.

“I am excited about returning to the Singapore Open which has a wonderful history with great champions,” he said.

“I have played the Singapore Open a number of times and the Serapong Course is a great test of golf, you really need to be on your game around there.

“Jordan Spieth set the bar with his performances this year and it will be good to take him on at the SMBC Singapore Open.”

The event will be staged from January 28th to 31st and held at Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong Course, and it is the first time the tournament is being held sing last played in 2012 before then-title sponsors Barclays ended its partnership.

The US$1 million (S$1.4 million) event is jointly sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation.

It is a full-field event that will feature the top-60 players from both Tours, plus several top-50 ranked players and leading local professionals and amateurs.

South Korean Yang finished 10th at the Singapore Open when it was last played in 2012 and was eager for another crack at the title.

“The Singapore Open is a great tournament and it is good to see it back on the schedule,” said Yang, whose last victory was the Kolon Korea Open in 2010.

“Sentosa Golf Club is a fantastic venue and I am expecting big crowds for the tournament.”
