Phil Mickelson has ruled out any visit to the infamous Dunvegan Hotel when in St.Andrews, and located a wedge from the 18th green, during what will be his sixth Old Course Open, and where he made his debut in golf’s oldest Major in 1990.
“If I go into the Dunvegan I would get mobbed,” he said smiling.
“Besides I can’t stand beer and I have had 1.7 beers since I was in college, so of three cans that I opened I drank one and had a little bit out of the other two.
“So I can’t stand beer and for me to sit around a bar, and as much as I would love to do it at St. Andrews, it’s not me.”
However on Tuesday night Mickelson will for a first time attend the ‘Former Open Champions Dinner’ given it is only held when The Open is played at St. Andrews.
But with the likes of five-time Open winner Peter Thomson, New Zealander Bob Charles, England’s Tony Jacklin and other older past winner’s in attendance Mickelson was not too sure if he will know everyone.
“They only have the dinner at St. Andrews so that will be great as not having been before, but I just hope everyone is wearing a name tag,” said Mickelson.
“And I am also going to play the ‘Past Champions’ match on Wednesday afternoon as that should be fun.”
