Shane Lowry Goes Horse Riding Same Day Rory McIlroy Ruptures Ligament.

In-form Shane Lowry revealed the day World No. 1 Rory McIlroy ruptured a ligament in his left ankle, he and his future wife were horse riding at Doonbeg.

Lowry expressed sympathy that McIlroy will miss next week’s Open Championship but like the majority of those competing this week in Scotland also remarked that golfer’s need to have a life away from the championship fairways.

“You can’t say Rory should not have been playing five a side and you have to half a life and I can’t talk as Wendy and I went horse riding,” he said.

“We all just hope he gets over the injury quickly and get back to 100% and not rush back as I did when I broke my wrist in 2010, but made the mistake of coming back just 80% fit.”

Lowry heads into the weekend well placed to capture the event having posted a second straight 66 to be among six players sharing second place on 8-under par.

Lowry’s only dropped one shot over his two rounds and that was at the 15th but the Carton House pro continues to impress 53 weeks after sharing ninth place behind McIlroy last year at Royal Liverpool.

“A pair of 66s is very nice and while I could have scored a lot better I am very happy as I am in a really good position heading to the weekend,” he said.

“But I am now at that stage of my career I feel I can compete in any tournament whether it be a normal tournament of a Major, and besides I just want to play well no matter where I am.

“There has been a lot of talk involving me of late about the fact I can win a Major but I’ve still got a lot to achieve before I win a Major.

“But then if one does get in the way between now and then (smiling) I’ll take it happily.”
