There was hardly any locomotion in World No. 1 Rory McIlroy’s opening round with the four-time Major winning posting a two over par 72.
McIlroy ended his round with a bogey to be trailing seven shots behind the clubhouse leading duo of Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and American Dustin Johnson, and not surprising two of the biggest hitters competing in this year’s U.S. Open and on one of the longest courses in U.S. Open history.
And while there seemed to be no concern with McIlroy’s driving he had big problems with the shortest club in his bag and missing a lot of putts that didn’t even touch the hole.

“I feel like I hit the ball very well today and feel like I did what I needed to do for the most part,” he said.
“I hit the driver well and also my iron shots while I gave myself a lot of looks.
“Around here you are going to hit it to 25 feet, 30 feet but then I didn’t really take advantage of the good shots I was hitting while I missed a couple coming in.
“So tee to green I felt like I played well.
“And as for my putting there was a couple of misreads in there and there was a couple of bad strokes as well.
“And when the ball is not rolling how would want it to, it’s hard to egg it on and just trust it and that’s how I felt on the greens, so then you start to make tentative strokes and not get a true read on the ball.
“So I just need to work on that aspect of my game and see if I can figure something in my game before going out tomorrow afternoon.”
McIlroy recorded two birdies in his round but also four bogeys and needed 34 putts.
