The 3-iron thrown by World No. 1 Rory McIlroy into the lake down the left side of the 8th fairway has been raised to the surface.
A scuba diver headed into the depths of the alligator-infested Blue Monster hazard earlier today (SAT) to retrieve the $200 Nike Vapor iron.
McIlroy had hurled the club some 70 yards into the drink in a bout of frustration during the second round of the WGC – Cadillac Championship here at Trump National Doral.
In fact, it was not the only 3-iron to find the bottom of the lake as Germany’s Marcel Siem sent a club into the water at the same hole on day three.
However it was theĀ four-time Major winning McIlroy’s club that drew all the media interest.
Despite a replacement Nike 3-iron arriving from Texas McIlroy elected to go into the third round with 13 clubs and one less than the maximum number of 14 as allowed under the Rules of Golf.
And this was after McIlroy’s manager Sean O’Flaherty arranged for Nike to freight a new 3-iron ASAP from ‘The Oven’ as the Nike equipment factory in Texas is affectionately called.

However McIlroy remarked he didn’t miss using a 3-iron.
“No, I played with 13 clubs today so I didn’t need it,” he said after posting a third round 72 to be sharing 12th place at one under par.
“I guess I looked where the pin positions were today and where the tees were and I felt I didn’t need a 3-iron.
“But then I don’t think I’ve ever done that before in a tournament.”
