The 2016 USA Ryder Cup captain will not be announced to well into 2015.
This is according to new PGA President Derek Sprague who will head a task force to elect a replacement to Tom Watson.
“We don’t want to focus just on winning in 2016, although that’s important,” said Sprague, who will co-chair the task force with PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua.
“We’re looking to build a process that gives us several years of winning teams here for the United States.”
The loss at Gleneagles was the eighth occasion in 10 Ryder Cup encounters the Americans have been on the losing side to Europe.
And while the answer to the USA getting back to winning the biennial event seems to be clear to everyone, the setting up of a task force is a first in the history of the Ryder Cup.
“As you can imagine, getting that group together has been a challenge,” Sprague said.
“He described his role as co-chair is to “get everyone’s viewpoints on the table, uncover every stone that we can about the process … and build a good winning process for years to come.
“I think it’s going to be important to select the captain so they can start to check out the players and the system and look at the process and that person will want to make some tweaks as well probably.”
The 11-member task force is comprised of past captains, players and PGA of America leadership. It will examine the entire Ryder Cup process, including the selection of captains and vice captains and the points system by which the team is determined.
Also on the task force will past captains Raymond Floyd, Tom Lehman and Davis Love III; past Ryder Cup team members Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods; and PGA Vice President Paul Levy.
The Europeans, who certainly don’t need a task force, are expected to announce a replacement to Paul McGinley in the week between Christmas and New Year.
